MJ did a lot of things before deciding what he really wanted to do was write sci-fi stories about alien coffee-smugglers. He left home at 15 and hitchhiked from Toronto to Vancouver, selling drawings to earn meal money along the way. He settled down in Vancouver for a while and got a job flipping burgers at a fast food joint called Lions Burger. The following year he hitchhiked down the west coast, following the coastal highway from Seattle down to Los Angeles where he lived for a while. Eventually he made his way back to Alberta, went to college, got a day job and started following his dream to write sci-fi. He now lives in Ontario with his wife, where they both work and keep an eye on their six grown kids living nearby.
