Lloyd R. Free was born on November 28, 1939, in San Jose. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory, Santa Clara University, The University of California at Berkeley, the University of Dijon, France, and Kansas University. He received a BA from Santa Clara University and an MA and PhD from Kansas University.
